Canada provides two categories of work permits: a work permit that requires a labour market test and the other is exempted from the test.

Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is required in general to indicate that the job offered to a candidate will not affect the prospective employees in Canada. Those who are applying for work permit should get a job offer from a Canadian employer who has already obtained a LMIA. A positive LMIA indicates a genuine need for a foreign worker.

In some cases, open work permits allow foreign workers to take up jobs in Canada. Such permits are not employer specific and do not require LMIA to be received by the employer. A few examples of open work permit include visiting faculties, post-graduate work permit and post-doctoral fellows.
